What are the Advantages of Joining a Fraternity or Sorority?

The fraternity and sorority community offers to its members the opportunity to make their college years an experience of a lifetime. Members are exposed to educational, social, philanthropic, networking and leadership opportunities unmatched by any other student group on campus. Membership in a fraternity or sorority is for a lifetime and there are opportunities to stay involved with the organization as an alumn(a) in cities across the nation. The networking opprotuntities with alumni are unmatched in any other student organization and friendships can last a lifetime.

What is Formal Recruitment?

Recruitment is the designated time when students that are interested in joining a fraternity or sorority have a chance to meet current members. Formal recruitment (formerly known as "Rush") takes place during the fall semester. Click here to learn more about men's and women's recruitment.

What are the financial obligations?

(Note: The following amounts are averages.)

Fraternities:

  • New member Dues $500/semester
  • Initiated member Dues $90/month
  • Rent $200/month

    Sororities:

  • New Member Dues $950/semester
  • Initiated Member Dues $600/semester
  • Live-in $2275/semester(includes dues, rent, meals)

    What is being a New Member all about?

    The new member period takes place after students have committed to join a fraternity or sorority and before they have been initiated. Typically chapters use this time to educate new members on various subjects such as fraternity history and membership expectations and responsibilities. This is a very exciting time for new fraternity and sorority members, as new friendships are cultivated and social opportunities abound. (Note: Time commitments and new member programs vary from chapter to chapter.)

    What is the Time Commitment?

    The most time consuming period is during pledgeship. This extra time commitment varies from chapter to chapter. All chapters have weekly meetings held on Monday evenings during the school year. The general rule of thumb is that the more time you put into your chapter the better your experience will be.

    What about Housing?

    Most chapters at the U of U offer housing opportunities to their members. It is a great way to live close to campus and experience all that fraternity and sorority life has to offer. Some chapters require their members to live in the house while others do not. The cost of living in a house varies from chapter to chapter.

    Do all Fraternity and Sorority members drink alcohol?

    No, not all members of the fraternity and sorority community drink alcohol. In recent years there has been an effort to curb drinking in chapter houses. Members of the fraternity and sorority community at the University of Utah are leaders in this effort and are striving to make social events safe and enjoyable for all students.

    What is the Policy on Alcohol?

    The University of Utah and the fraternity and sorority community only support the legal use of alcohol and provide methods for punishing chapters who violate this rule. In addition, chapters must register social functions and hire proper police security at events where 60 or more individuals are present.     What is the Policy on Hazing?

    Federal and state laws prohibit hazing. Every fraternity and sorority represented on the University of Utah campus forbids hazing in any form and provides methods for punishing chapters that violate this rule. The University of Utah and the fraternity and sorority community are committed to betterment of the individual through higher education and human dignity, whether in the classroom or in a student organization.
