Be Yourself. The most important thing to remember is to be yourself. The purpose of recruitment is to find the fraternity with which you feel most comfortable. In order to do that be yourself and go with your gut feelings.

What to Wear. For men, recruitment week is casual dress. During formal dinners on Wednesday you may need to wear a coat and tie, so consult the chapter who is hosting it to see what is appropriate.

Attend all events. If you cannot attend certain events it is important to notify your recruitment counselor. He will then notify all fraternities. Your absence without further information indicates to a fraternity that you are no longer interested in their organization and they will remove you from their invitation list.

Show up on time. Events last for a limited amount of time, so take advantage of the time allotted to find out more about the organization and its members.

Keep an open mind. Take advantage of recruitment events to meet men from as many chapters as possible, regardless of who you know or what you have heard about various chapters. Base your decisions on what you know to be true from your interactions with each chapter and be wary of organizations that degrade or belittle other chapters.

Ask Questions. The organization that you select will be the one you will affiliate yourself with for the rest of your life, so ask as many questions as possible.

Questions you may want answered:

  • What is required of a pledge/new member?
  • How much time does being a member take?
  • When is initiation?
  • What is your philanthropy?
  • What are your monthly dues? Does that cover social events?
  • How much is rent?
  • What is the minimum GPA to be an active member?
  • What is the chapter's GPA?
  • Does the fraternity offer scholarships?
